Day 31 Julia Creek to Charters Towers
Well today we travelled along the Flinders Highway. We have now found the worst highway in Australia especially between Julia Creek and Hughenden. Its all black soil and it is very "whoopy" . You wallow around a lot so much so that the spare wheel bracket on the back of the van broke. Russ made it so its not like it was not a heavy duty set up. Don't know how someone with 4 or 5 bikes hanging off the back would fare.
The best part of the trip was stopping at Kronosaurus Corner at Richmond which is part of the Visitors Centre. We really enjoyed Winton but both came away thinking this was better. so many fossils and displays to look at and they are still digging them up . Complete skeletons found nowhere else in the world . Fantastic!
Stopped in at Hughenden Information Centre as part of the Dinosaur Trail. This was on the wall outside . It is made up of old car parts and tools.
We then bounced our way through to Charters Towers for our next stop. Macrossan Park is 18kms outside town on the Burdekin River. Great free camp with showers and toilets so again quite popular.
We have been here before but spent a couple of nights here and took the time to wander around town with its abundance of historical buildings from the times of the gold rush. The weather has been a little cloudy and it looks like we are heading for some rain at the coast .
Charters Towers has a great gold history and they are busy completing this park as part of the gold history.
