Day 7 JC Ruins to Betoota

Day 2 of our Birdsville adventure saw us heading to Betoota . Its about half way out to Birdsville and you can free camp next to the Betoota Hotel . The road itself was not too bad as there are a lot of roadworks going on to upgrade the road between the Big Red Bash traffic and the Betoota/Birdsville Races events. We were surprised with the amount of bitumen but there was also plenty of places where the corrugations were plentiful and lots of dust. Same rules apply - take your time and be aware of animals on the road as it is open cattle country.

Not that far from Betoota is a place called Deon's Lookout in honour of a young fella who died in a helicopter crash. Robbo's recommended we have a look and it does give you a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. One of Russ's close friends Pete grew up on a property Mt Leonard which is right at Betoota and it was great to see it laid out on the information board at the lookout.

Pulled up at Betoota but there was no one home - just a sign to say he would be back so so we just set up camp in front of the pub.  Robbo turned up later and seems a very laid back character. Again it was pretty quiet - photos show how different it is when the BRB and the races are on.

Steel Capped Thongs

It was nice to sit out in front of the fire that night - very bright moon looking at the stars after another beautiful sunset.
