Day 4 Bourke to Cunnamulla
Today we crossed into Queensland. We did plan to do some
free camping but the weather has changed all of that . It rained overnight in
Bourke and was raining when we left to head north.
The rain eased as we got closer to Cunnamulla with some blue
sky and a nice 28 degrees.
We ended up staying at the Warrego Riverside Caravan Park
and managed to get a really nice drive thru powered site due to a cancellation.
Beautiful spot with your own private garden. You could see the weather was
coming so we quickly checked out town including a camel burger from the local
café. Yum!
They have a great visitors centre with lots of information
about the great Artesian Basin and the history of that for the town and the
properties surrounding it and the museum collection. James Tyson was a major
character in all of this with multiple properties and he was worth over 2
million pounds when he died in the late 1800’s. Interesting for both Russ and I
as he had an influence around Toowoomba and the Downs, so we see names like Mt
Tyson and James Street named after him.
These country towns seem to have painted water towers rather
than silos but still great to look at.
The Darling River is very full at the moment so you wouldn't be tempted into a swim even though it was pretty hot before the rain.
As predicted the rain came in late that afternoon with a storm and a downpour round about drinks time around the campfire so that put a dampener on things literally. It then rained/stormed most of the night and was still going the next morning when we left for Charleville.
